he can't catch.
He HAS. Something's wrong this year, but he has before.
McVay made it clear he believes this is a temporary situation and Tavon will be working on fielding punts and working through this issue. McVay sees the problem as temporary. And he's right about that.
McVay knows better than to act like the last 4 games sums up an issue that has haunted Tavon all along. He knows better because those are not the facts.
He may be on track to break his record if he was left fielding punts right now, but he's never been sure handed [

This is not temporary, or something that is going away. It's not even a new issue. The argument used to be that his reward in returns justified the risk, and now I see that changes over his injury. Kind of like his rushing numbers- 6 carries for 27 yards, including his 27 yard TD run. The five other carries, not so much...
Sorry, ZN, I've heard all of the justifications for Tavon, but I also see plenty of other teams successfully doing the same misdirection in their offensive schemes with players not named Tavon Austin. I'm not so sure McVay tailored this offense specific to TA, or TA just fits a scheme in McVay's offense.
Not going to get into another Tavon argument about whether other teams have explosive fast runner/receiver hybrids like that.
Yeah you're right about the fumbles in the past but the issue
now is the frequency...and it is McVay's view that this is a thing he can work on:

(On if he thinks the reason that WR Tavon Austin is struggling with punt returns is mental)
“I think a little bit. Yeah. I think that you can just get in your head a little bit. You know the wrist thing is probably part of it. But what you appreciate about Tavon he’s not going to make any excuses about it. He’s got to field the punts better than that more consistently in terms of being able to track it. He’s going to continue to work on that in practice and try to improve moving forward.”
(On if he has decided if Austin will remain the punt returner)
“Right now we’re going to give Tavon a break from that. We’re going to evaluate whether it’s (WR) Cooper Kupp or (WR) Pharoh Cooper, but Tavon is going to continue to remain a big part of our offense. I think you look at what his does on the touchdown run, when the ball’s in his hands we’ve got to find ways to use him. He’s a very good football player, great play maker. He’ll continue to be that. But in the meantime, while we give him a chance to get some work, get away from it a little bit – we’re going to give him a break from the punt return duties.”
