If there was ... you'd think at least one of his offensive "gurus" ... Rob Boras, Chris Weinke, Frank Cignetti, et al ... would have a job somewhere at a high level as something other than designated spear-carrier.

You can probably find some ancient posts by me right after the trade for Goff was made and he was drafted in which I said the only drawback of the trade was that I didn't think he was with a staff that could help him much.

I think that was proven out.

You disagree.

I guess that's where we'll have to leave it.

The one thing I think we can agree on is that what happened last Saturday will mean next-to-nothing if Goff doesn't continue to improve his play. This can't be a plateau. It must be a single step forward.

Oh, see, to me, this discussion isn't about Fisher, it;s about Goff. My question is, was Goff that far behind in 2016? And I have to say yes.

Now on Fisher....I don't agree with most negative takes on him. I just don't agree with them. That doesn't mean I think he';s a misunderstood genius. And it doesn't mean I don't have criticisms of him. But what I see is this. Not arguing for it in a "challenge to the panel" kind of way, just describing my vote for an informal poll. No coach has ever or could ever have a winning record if he faces this combination of things: (1) playing a veteran, starting caliber qb in only 23 of 80 games, and (2) having a relatively healthy, decently veteran OL in no more than 38 of 80 games.

The times when they had BOTH things? 15 of 80 games.

No one has ever done well under those conditions. And also no team for decades has ever won after moving a team across state lines.

Now let's say they did have the basic conditions---a relatively healthy, decently veteran OL and a (non-rookie) starting caliber qb. I have no doubt whatsoever they would do better. Would you like him then? Probably not. Would that bother me? No.

In terms of offense, yes teams have won playing a ball control offense that programs in deep shots in combination with tough defense and tough special teams. It's one of the ways teams can win in this era. I have no problem with that approach. They just didn't have the horses.

But that's all an aside.

Fisher is gone so my CURRENT issue is Goff. I just am looking at who and what he is. And to me, it's just completely true that he entered the league that far behind in terms of knowing and executing a pro-style offense. Air Raid college qbs just DO start that far behind.

So in assessing Goff, for me, that is one of the main things to know about his rookie year.

If we differ on that it's fine.

We probably agree on McVay and on Goff's raw talent and his chances of developing into a good one.

Good to chat with you. You have very sharp, distinctive prose and it's always fun to read. We don't always agree on everything, but, I forgive you your failings when it comes to that. Kidding. Lol. (Me funny guy.)
