IMO (again) I think he opts out because yes it gives him another opportunity at FA but it also doesn't lock him into a team that is going nowhere (if that's the case). Maybe he wants assurances that the team he plays on for the rest of his career is actually going somewhere

How many of us are willing to make the same kind of sacrifices? Let's say that I know that where I work, in 4 years I will be worth more than they're paying me but I agree not to care? Why? Why would I make that sacrifice?
Well truth is, some might be okay with that, some not. Either way that gets down to an individual decision.
It's only in discussing football contracts for players that we tend argue people should give up opportunities that we ourselves in our own lives know full well are valid individual choices.
