I doubt that McVay is totally locked in on Goff at this point. Why would he be? He needs to see Goff show that he is up to the job. And how can he be sure that Goff won't stink it up in the PS and continue to stink it up in the regular season. Goff has not earned it on the field yet.
I don't think McVay will make any bold moves to trade for a QB until next season. The weird thing for me is that I think Mannion stinks, and I would be surprised if McVay thought Mannion was a possible solution. So I have no idea what McVay's back up plan is if Goff stinks it up. Goff is gonna have to be really bad for McVay to bench him. My fear is that I think its likely that if Goff is really bad, switching to Mannion won't help.
Simply put, this year is all about Goff. If he stinks it up, McVay will make a move in the offseason.
If I'm Stan, I'm hiring you, McVay to make hay with Goff. I have a lot invested in the trade that acquired him. I have picks, lost. I have the reputation of other men in the organization. I have the fan base. I'm hiring you, with your reputation for being a QB whisperer to come in here and make magic. It would do nothing but raise your stock and you could become a demi-god in LA if you make that work. If you make Goff a star, you will become a star. Fail, and use this as leverage to bring your QB in from the Redskins and the glow will come off you. You will be the Coach that needs "your guys" to make it work and make you go. Fail, and that will be the talk of next season. Not what you are doing now, but what you didn't get done last year.
That's my hypothetical. Goff may not have "earned anything on the field yet", but you have to know he'll be given every chance to do so. And anyone that doesn't think McVay is tied to Goff is just not viewing this correctly. They are joined at the hip. If one fails, both fail. It's not optional.
