You're right--there is no clear evidence that McVay sees a high ceiling for Goff. He may well see that!
I am just trying to be careful in distinguishing between what seems to me to be significant indicators and what we don't know. Fact is, McVay has not gushed over Goff at all. That doesn't mean that he isn't quietly gushing. It just means that we haven't heard the kind of praise we have heard concerning other players.
I'm just trying to establish the floor, not of what Goff will be, but of what it is reasonable to suppose that McVay thinks of him. I think it's clear that McVay thinks he will AT LEAST be enough to improve with. That's the bottom of what McVay is most likely thinking.
Now, on the glass half full or half empty thing. There is indeed a divide between the two viewpoints here, and probably most other places. I have written about this and talked about Doomsters and Hopesters.
As for me, emotionally, I tend to be hopeful. But I am also scarred by disappointments and tend to avoid optimism.
When it comes, however, to trying to think clearly, I must confess that I feel uncomfortable with both perspectives. I think both sides claim more than they actually know. In this thread, I see Hopesters expressing what seems to me to be unfounded optimism and I see Doomsters refusing to take seriously the implications of the stacked deck Goff faced last year. I get irritated with both houses, to be honest.
I dunno whether this year's Ram glass has water to the 50% line. It might be above or below that line. But I really don't feel aligned with either word:
full or
empty. There are so many imponderables with this team that I don't feel comfortable either way.
So, I try to fall back on what we know and to distinguish that from what we only hope for or fear. That's the only sense I can make out of it all.
The season is beginning and we'll see. I think there is some reason to hope but I will not be surprised if it all goes wrong again. And I refuse to bet my emotional state either way.
