and I'm no Fisher supporter.... and what I mean is 'harm'... in that he 'harmed' Goff. I doubt that is true. I think he just didn't know how to develop him.

What I'm getting is I don't think Goff took a step backwards... and did take some steps forwards but not at an increase that's acceptable in the NFL. Therein lies my hope with McVay. I agree with those that say this will be Goff's actual rookie year.. simply from a progress perspective. - JamesJM

I partly agree with that. Or agree with part of it.

I will say this. I am on record as saying many things went wrong in 2016 and that efforts to reduce that to one or 2 things are, in my eyes, too selective and exclusionary.

But one of the things was that Goff was really THAT not ready. (I am one of the those who also saw good things and future promise in the midst of the mayhem.) At the same time IMO there was too much else going on to expect much more. For example the entire idea of 2016 was that for the season to work, the defense had to be steadily strong (it wasn't) and they had to have a strong running game too (they didn't). That would have allowed them to both start a decent #2 caliber qb type, and to start a rookie qb from an offensive system that has yet to ever produce a consistently solid NFL qb. But then one thing that went wrong with the running game was Gurley himself, who underperformed in relation to his rookie year (very detailed stats back this btw).

Okay that wasn't even the long version (a lot is left out), but it wasn't the short version either. Short version: Goff was green and was in tough circumstances.

So now, I will say this.

A lot of what went on in 2016 was Goff.

If Goff improves in 2017 (which I expect) it will be at least partly because McVay is a good offensive coach, and also at least partly because Goff is no longer a rookie and has learned from his rookie year, and also at least partly because the running game and defense are more stable this year than they were last year.

That doesn;t cover everything, but IMO it's the essence of it.

So yes McVay will be part of the equation, as will Goff, as will other factors you need to go right if you don't want to be in the position where your young, still developing qb has to carry it all himself.

....So my post is like reading a Chinese restaurant menu, but I did finally put in my individual order. I like seafood myself.

Is the headline "Can McVay turn Goff around?" fair? I think not.
