he did not have a bda year last year he had an average year last year, but yes he is getting paid more than i would like. however imo he has been a very good cb over his career which must be taken into consideration as performance is not constant. the questions in my mind is whether last year was an anomaly or perhaps he is simply a good #2 corner who benefited from playing with jj AND can he play in wades scheme? i think mcvay has the same questions which is why they did not try real hard to sign him long term. i wouldnt consider that a "botch". i consider it a strategic (sometimes you need to spend money to make money) use of resources as it gives them a year to (1) figure his fit with the team; (2) save cash over the long term; (3) a "good" corner for at least 1 more year; and (4) time to identify potential replacements.
if i had to guess, i would think he is gone next year, but i think hes gone because the rams want him gone or not at the price he is asking. I think tru would prefer to play in la but wants to get paid. so there are a lot of factors flying around that could change in a year.

1. making he has a pro bowl season. while perhaps still overpaid, most people wont care if he produces on the field.
2. he hasnt left yet..perhasp he signs a long term deal after the season.
3. can you "lose" a player you dont really want? its not entirely clear how wade and the rams feel about true. they clearly prefer him over other options that wer available this year but may not be willing to pay him the money he wants. playing in wades scheme for a year will likely push that opinion in one direction or the other.
finally. you indicated that the rams should see if he can rebound then give him an extension. why do you propose they do that without franchising him?

No. They overpaid for an average season only to lose him next year.
Did he have a bad year last season? Yes. Are they overpaying him? Yes. Will he be gone next year? All signs point to yes. That's my only assumption. But the writing is on the wall, wouldn't you agree with that?
