There's a story I love about Bob Hoover, a famous pilot, from his autobiography, about a time he was in a plane crash:
Quote
"Investigators found that the plane had just been fueled by line personnel who mistook the piston-engine Shrike for a similar turboprop model, filling the tanks with jet fuel instead of avgas (aviation gasoline). There was enough avgas in the fuel system to taxi to the runway and take off, but then the jet fuel was drawn into the engines, causing them to stop."
The mechanic responsible went up to Hoover to resign, shocked and ashamed that he had almost killed somebody with his carelessness. Hoover responded:
Quote
“There isn’t a man alive who hasn’t made a mistake. But I’m positive you’ll never make this mistake again. That’s why I want to make sure that you’re the only one to refuel my plane tomorrow. I won’t let anyone else on the field touch it.”
You have to realize that these kids have been told YES their entire lives. Being an athlete bound for the NFL is like being a god. Think of how often athletes have their stupid mistakes covered up for them in high school and college for the sake of the team. You become convinced of your own invincibility.
There is nothing wrong in my eyes with McVay giving this kid a second chance. But that's it.
