The key there is when Gonzalez says "but there are ways around it." He's right. Whether they will do it in this case, yes you can convert a contract through an extension in such a way that you do not increase the first year cap hit. For example, they could give him a 6 year deal, and part of it would be a 18 M signing bonus, pro-rated at 3 M a year. So he gets 18 M (of his total sum) in 2017, in his pocket, but then the Rams just convert his current 3 M salary to part of the bonus, and while AD gets 18 M, the Rams can count only 3 M of that against the 2017 cap. THEN you give him both a huge guaranteed salary and guaranteed roster bonus in 2018. Since it is guaranteed, AD gets that money regardless, but it allows the Rams to count a huge amount of the overall contract against the 2018 cap. So as long as the Rams have 2018 cap space...which they do...then they can work around the 2017 cap.

That's just one example of one thing they COULD do. So yes it is possible to give AD a huge contract without it having any effect on the 2017 cap. Not saying that's how they will do it but yes they can do it like that.
