I agree. They don't have much room in 2017 but there are several ways to manipulate the cap without "robbing Peter to pay Paul" that can give Donald a few million of the guaranteed money in the extension
this year while having a large portion of it hit 2018 when Johnson is off the books and they have a lot of cap space.
This is a large assumption on my part but I'd still do it this way- you want Donald's guaranteed $$ pretty much paid by 2020 so that (A) the Rams have the option with him once he turns 30 (2021) and (B ) IF- a huge IF- Goff develops into a very good QB they can kick in his extension with very little overlap.
