It remains to be seen what Lamp will become. Maybe he surprises and goes on to be another Zach Martin.
But one thing we know for sure now: Not one of the 32 GMs think that Lamp is Martin.
Martin was the 4th or 5th OL picked in a deeeeeep OL class; he was the 16th pick in a deeeeeep overall draft. He then immediately became a pro bowl guard.
I guarantee you, if ANY of the 32 GMs thought he was going to be that, he would have certainly been selected in the 1st round. Some of those GMs passed twice.
Is is possible that Lamp is not this football savior that some are making him out to be? Maybe passing on him was not a mistake at all. The "experts" where most of us get our opinions from are not really experts. If they were, we wouldn't have access to their opinion because they'd be employed by an NFL team.
What happened to Lamp was actually predicted. Makes me start doubting if he's the answer at all. Consider this blurb posted a few days before the draft:
Guards
1. FORREST LAMP, Western Kentucky (6-3 ½, 307, 5.01, 1-2): Started 51 games, all but three at LT. “Might be the toughest guy in the draft,” said one scout. “He probably is maxed out (physically), but guys like that play. But (expletive), no, he’s no first-rounder.” ...He’s an undersized left tackle who has intangibles and athletic ability, and that makes me think of a center. He’s got that kind of leadership. He’s a really good third- or fourth-round pick that will get overdrafted based on no linemen.” ....“He played the premier position, and played it well. He’s the best interior prospect. Ideally, you don’t want to take a guy like that in the first.”
Damning words. I'm not gonna judge Snead on passing on "Zach Martin" when no one in the know thinks he's Martin's equal.
Well said, dz, as usual.
Many posters have become emotionally invested in Lamp. Emphasis emotionally.
I was tempted to go there, but held back because it seems that some nerves are a bit raw today.
Glad you did, though. It's a valid question.
