And I know that came quickly. But he wasn't McVay's pick. If, by the end of the year, if McVay doesn't think he's going to get it, we'll get Cousins in the offseason. If McVay is everything everyone says he is, Cousins won't do as well without him and Washington won't franchise him for a third straight year and he'll want to come play for McVay.
If McVay thinks Goff does look like he's going to get it, then we stay with Goff.
I am also very interested to see how the other two QBs on our roster develop under McVay.
He may not develop in one year.
Doesn't mean he's done.
He could easily be a 2 year project with also McVay seeing it that way and believing in him.
If Goff has it, and McVay sees him that way, even if it takes more than a year, McVay isn't going to suddenly dump him.
I may have not been clear (I hurried through that last post). Add in your point, there are 3 likely possibilities:
1. It's clear to McVay that Goff is not going to get it.
2. It's clear to McVay that Goff is going to get it, but it is going to take time.
3. It's clear to McVay that Goff gets it.
If #1 happens, McVay keeps Goff on the roster but - since the success of a head coach is most closely linked to a good QB - he will look elsewhere. With Cousins likely available, it could be the perfect reunion to jump start the offense. Not dumping him, but getting someone who he knows he can work with. If we're 4-12 and our offense sucks, Cousins is on his way.
If #3 happens we're in great shape.
If #2 happens (no intended bathroom humor pun intended) McVay has to decide how far away he is. If he's another year away or more and we're hurting, McVay has to decide if he can win while waiting for his QB to get better or whether he goes with the QB that he shared great success with and develop Goff some more. Either way it looks like Cousins will be available next year so that will be McVay's window to pull the trigger. Or not.
I want Goff to succeed. But the Cal offense was a junk offense and we all know he didn't read defenses (not the entire defense), take snaps under center, etc. The good news is Goff has had an opportunity to acclimate a bit to the NFL and has picked up some experience in the areas he was inexperienced before last year. The bad news, he will be learning another system. The really bad news is after living in NorCal near the ocean and being at Cal for three years, he didn't know which direction the sun set. You can see the ocean from Cal and see the beautiful sunsets. Growing up in California he has probably seen a map of California and knows we're in the west. It's an easy connection to make seeing a giant ball of flame set over the ocean every day. Much easier than reading a defense. The only time the sun disguises where it is, is during foggy, cloudy or rainy days. Defenses try to disguise themselves every play.
