I hate being the Kupp negative Nellie because I'm honestly a big fan of him...in his role as a slot WR.
No one talks about him vs press coverage. Why? Because he is protected from it based on his teams scheme and almost exclusive use in the slot. Watch him on 90+% of his catches...free release and simply runs to a spot. Defender never even breathes in his direction. I have never seen him face physical COLLEGE play and I'm supposed to just assume he makes the huge jump to NFL physical play without issue? I think he will adjust...to smaller slot corners, bigger physical outside CBs will be another story.
How are people projecting a college slot WR from a spread scheme to an NFL outside receiver in a pro style offense?
You are completely right. He really hasn't been tested against outside CBs.
According to PFF, he ran routes from the slot 85.6% of the time. That's one of the highest rates in college. On the pro level, I'm assuming he will be slot only.
I'm also concerned about his athleticism. From the slot, COD abilities are the dominant physical traits he needs. But as an outside WR, he needs more long speed. A 4.62 40 is concerning especially since I've seen some reports that he doesn't accelerate quickly.
He's not my first choice b/c I want more than a slot only WR.
