Snead essentially admitted to a swinging for the fences strategy in the GRob year. He suggested several times that he was looking for two HOF’ers with his two first round picks.
He was swinging for the fences on Donald too. Looking for a homerun is not always a bad thing.
The problem with GRob was that he was the consensus #1 rated OT primarily on potential and upside. He was very raw. Too raw IMO to be drafted at #2. GRob lacked entirely pass pro skills which is the primary skillset a LT needs. So drafting him that high was always a foolish, foolish idea. It's like drafting a QB who has great measurable but has no ability, skills or fundamentals in uh, you know throwing the ball.
LT was a huge need but they had several other good LT’s available who would have been much safer.
