And I have been surprised that I haven't seen or heard this mentioned - either here, or in the broadcast booth, or in the media...
During the offseason, it was reported that Gurley had lost a dramatic amount of muscle weight, and was a lot lighter than he was all of last season. He said so himself - and remarked that he was not at all interested in gaining the weight back.
I remember being concerned about this, and wondering why the he!! he wouldn't want to stay at the weight that was so successful for him last year??
He LOOKS dramatically smaller and less muscular this season. The difference is not subtle.
One of his apparent abilities last year was breaking tackles and being able to brush off defenders who didn't have a secure hold of him. Not so much this year.
I'm not suggesting this is the ONLY factor in his poorer showing this year, but common sense suggests it IS a factor. Maybe a big one.
Again - not sure why this is rarely/never brought up when analyzing what may be wrong this season.
The dude should actively work on gaining back ALL of the weight he lost, IMO. If not now, then certainly during the offseason. Especially since losing all that weight hasn't appeared to increase his speed at all. I think he's just better as a bigger back.
