It's just not feasible. These rookies are on a ticking clock, you likely need 3 years of film to assess if you have the guy that's worth committing to long term. Even then you may get it wrong. Colin Kapernick? By the end of year 3 you're already under pressure to extend the 5th year option or go for a long term deal. You don't have the luxury to let a QB sit - when he is cheap, he needs reps so that by year 3, he's got 2 years of experience and you've got another year or 2 of high level discount play (Russell Wilson). Then your salary cap dollars can be used on the team around him. I'm not saying Goff is ready to play now, I'm saying if a guy's coming out of college not ready to play pro ball - don't draft him #1 and give up a king's ransom to get him.
All of the cases of QB's sitting are from a decade ago or more. Who's the last successful QB who sat his entire rookie season, not counting guys like Rogers who were sitting behind hall of famers?
I think its time to start him also, but as to your point about the salary cap, actually its the opposite with the new CBA as opposed to a few years ago...before the latest CBA highly drafted rookies came in making way too much money and teams were more likely to start getting their monies worth as soon as possible. now its much easier to let them develop ...yes, it'd be great if they came in ready to roll while making less money, but its much easier to let them develop if needed.
I would like to see him out there after what we saw with case and the 4int day he had, but if he's not ready, he's not ready....I don't think Fish would just let him sit if he thought he was.
Paxton Lynch came from a similar type system, was also a first rounder and reports are that he is no where near ready this year and that is with a very good coaching staff in Denver.
People seem to forget that the other rookies(Dak and Carson) in this years draft were all expected to sit, its only by injuries and trade that they are playing this year.
