If you line up a list of the greatest QBs to play this game, none of them were hugely impacting in their first year. Most are pocket QBs too. Most have accuracy and a nice to quick release. Most have a good feel in the pocket. All those things are strengths for Jared. Writing him off right now is simply idiotic.
On the flipside of that look at the guys who had big impact in year one. Most have some mobility, to where they can run read option and keep defenses on their heels a bit. Most don't tend to last very long for that reason as well. Guys like RG3 are a great example since he was involved in our infamous trade.
There are some outliers to this, notably Wilson. But I think it's a general truth that:
1. First year is not some key litmus test for the future of an NFL QB.
2. Pocket QBs have longer careers.
Last but not least keep in mind that Goff was 21 when the Rams took him. He's got a few years of development behind guys like Wentz, which I am sure went into the equation. I know nothing's gonna change, people are going to keep that fear that he might bust, and he might, but gotta point out again that this stuff is mostly knee jerk when you're talking about guys who run this league for 10-15 years as great QBs do.
The coaching staff is the key right now: are they the guys you want bringing this kid online? That is what Stan has to address IMO.
