That's the short answer. They see a 15 year franchise QB in Goff, once he gets his feet on the ground.
Lots of playoff games.
Maybe a SB, or two.
Such things are worth a lot of draft picks for a team already on the cusp. That's my take, anyway.

No, not necessarily at all. He thinks Goff is a franchise qb (not necessarily an elite qb). A franchise qb by definition is one who is good enough to consistently start over the years, and the team does not seek to replace him--he is their qb.
Unless you think guys like Flacco, Ryan, Rivers, and Eli are elite qbs, then, franchise qb and elite qb are different categories.
And he IS right to see Goff as probably being that. He has what it takes to probably be that.
Plus I think he has some traits that could translate to elite (once he has his feet under him). Watching him at Cal when I knew they would draft him, I saw a lot of Warner and Brady traits in him. Though with a better arm than Brady.
So why trade up?
Because they wanted the best qb in this draft, determined it was Goff, and knew full well they weren't going to get him at 15.
And btw I personally think the trade was worth it. It's a fair price to draft a decade-long franchise qb. Nothing else they could have added with those picks would have been of equivalent value IMO.
