One thing about Keenum that we've gotta admire.
He handled the Goff trade up in the best possible manner, gaining everybody's respect in the process.
Worked his tail off and improved himself all offseason.
Told Fisher that he was gonna make it as hard as possible to take him off the field.
Has supported the rookie to the max.
Has played very well in both practice and in the PS games.
He is the unquestioned leader on O.
Never ever a whiff of off field issues.
A terrific role model for Goff and Mannion.
His teammates simply make plays for him.
That last one might be the most important, huh? Intangible, but real.
I believe that we can win with Keenum. Certainly until Goff "gets it".
We're lucky to have him during this extended transition period.
How does a guy like Keenum, who in terms of physical skills is a #2 qb and not your first choice to be a franchise qb, play well? (Play well for what he is, that is.)
It's all the intangibles.
He has enough arm, he's tough, he can move around and improvise a bit. But no one will mistake him for Cam Newton.
But what gives him the edge is all intangibles. Character, mindset, will to self-maximize, smarts, doing what he can to enhance his play. For example people dispute whether he throws long but in fact he does (because the Rams do...it's part of who they are). He does it through decision making, quick recognition, timing, and anticipation...things you CAN work on. I get the sense when he is in there that the issues with audibles, calling protections, and sight adjustments are all working smoothly.
It's not enough if you are counting on a few seasons of qb play. It's enough if he is a placeholder and #2 called upon to manage games until the rookie is ready.
I keep reading where people say, but he's just a game manager. And the simple answer to that is, duh.
But you can be better or worse at THAT, too. If it is possible to find an edge to do it better, CK seems to be on it.
He is just a dedicated student of the game with enough instincts and game-smarts to give him whatever bit of an edge he can find.
