I don't know if the CBs and DBs as a whole are subpar, but they do play off the WRs a lot and just give up slant routes like candy. Contrast that with the Broncos DBs who contest every ball. Our WRs must be shocked when they see that in a game after going against our defensive scheme in practice and all of TC.

Well, I think the Broncos defense is so effective not because doctrinally man coverage is presumably better (man coverage has drawbacks too) but for one simple reason (or 2 actually)---Ware and Miller.

Phillips has coached defenses before his way that were not as good as Denver's, because he did not have Denver's linebackers. In Houston his defenses were, from 2011-2014, ranked 4th, 9th, and then 24th in yards, and 12th, 9th, then 32nd in points. Remember in 2013 when the Rams got the best of that Houston Phillips defense (in Houston no less) and beat them 38-13 with basically less at receiver than what they have even now and nothing at RB but Stacy? (One score was by Ogletree, the rest was an offense that was simply opportunistic). That was Phillips and his 7th ranked defense. Good, as Phillips defenses always are, but not the terror they were in Denver in 2015, the major difference being Ware and Miller.

Whereas I am fine with Wms;s defense (which incidentally proved regularly they could play man--they were the first defense to disrupt GB last year, and they did it playing man...Rams only lost that game because of Foles, whereas up to that game GB was considered offensively unstoppable).

The 2 defenses just work differently and again to me, the contrast is not right doctrine v. wrong doctrine.

For example last year the Rams were 2nd in the entire league in opponent red zone scoring percentage (TDs only)---Denver was 16th.

They were not that far apart in terms of offensive points allowed either--even without Ogletree and Quinn, Rams were 9th, Denver was 4th. (Seattle was first.)
