Look around the league and ask how many teams replace their LOT every 4 or 5 years. IF they're any good.
They knew they would be paying him down the road big money the minute they drafted him. You draft a left OT precisely TO do that.
The other options are not good. You can start over at the position every 4 or 5 years (and again how many teams do that?) Or you sign a FA, and good FAs at LOT are rare (for the simple reason that, as I said, they are usually being signed by the team that drafted them.)
So this whole "squeeze what you can out of him for 2 years" thing just does not apply. He was a decade long Ram starting on his draft day in 2014, and was always calculated in as a future big cap hit.
Unless he doesn't work out. In which case they have no choice but to start over. And as a rule, these days, rookie LOTs struggle. That vast majority of them. There are rarely exceptions to that.
