One thing I will say Goff, attempted 12 passes - is that how you get a QB ready to play? Forget the WRs for a second. I believe the Rams offensive coaching just might be awful
How do you explain Goff and Presscott. What kind of offense did Presscott play in? Was he under center and was he reading defenses and calling plays in the huddle?
Also did the Rams not have a script of plays for Goff To help build some confidence? I think Goff looking the way he does is a reflection of Jeff Fisher and this coaching staff
Hunh. I agree that Goff isn't ready and certainly doesn't look as good as Keenum. Otherwise, not understanding where you're coming from in blaming the coaching staff.
12 attempted passes - yes, why not? As we've discussed ad infinitum, the Rams will run more than most. I'd also just as soon NOT invite the defense to try teeing off on my quarterbacks.
As for Prescott, maybe the Cowboys got lucky. Or maybe preseason is preseason; he wouldn't be the first NFL QB to look like an All-Pro only when it doesn't count.
I see nothing that makes me think Goff won't be the team's "franchise QB" in not too long. In the meantime, I'm just glad to see Keenum and the offense under him do well and hope that carries over into the regular season.
I think it's easy to blame the coaching staff. Assuming Goff has the talent and ability, what's the one thing a QB needs to get acclimated to the NFL? Reps. I'm not saying Goff should have been handed the keys from day 1, but realistically, shouldn't he be getting most of the reps? The first preseason game for example. Why not give Mannion the start and Goff the rest of the first half and second half? Not that it would have mattered, I guess. He got the bulk of playing time in game 2 but only got 12 pass attempts.
Which is an important point that has been brought up before. If the Rams are going to feature the running game and not really be a passing team, why on God's green Earth spend a #1 overall and 6 premium picks to get a QB who wasn't a "sure thing", if at all? I have to assume this team is being built in the Seahawks mold so why didn't, as many armchair draft experts on Rams boards suggested, draft Prescott to fill the Russell Wilson role? Even if you wanted to draft a QB in the first round, they could have stayed put and likely got Paxton Lynch.
Because if they're going to sit Goff for a while and let him learn behind our latest backup who's starting, they could have done the same thing with Lynch for a lot less resources. Or Cook or whoever.
Goff only got 12 pass attempts because the defense couldn't get the Chiefs off the field - Chiefs held the ball 13 minutes longer than the Rams. Given that, what could the coaches have done differently except try to dial up passes constantly? And THAT, IMO, would have been a terrible move, especially w/the Rams (and both teams) shuffling personnel constantly. No, I don't want my prize young QB setting up to pass time after time behind a shifting OL.
Second, so you wouldn't have given CK ANY reps? Not me. I want the best guy to win the job and seeing how they do in preseason is obviously a big part of that. It'd be AWESOME if Goff looked better than Keenum already. But we knew about the exclusive-shotgun offense he ran and that he didn't call his own plays. Throw in the "big league" adjustment and I'm just not dismayed that he can't yet beat out a vet guy who started in this offense and has had TONS more time to prepare. Again, if we're still having this conversation next year - and not simply because CK morphed into a superstar - I'll be with you. Now? WAY premature.
Third, if getting "Russell Wilson" in the 3rd or 4th were that easy, every team would do it. But the truth is that even "run-first" teams fare much better w/great QB's and great QB's are much more likely found high in round 1. For sure if Goff turns out to be less than a very good QB, then the Rams blew it. I just don't think the fact that he's not better than CK yet means he won't become a very good QB soon enough.
