Frankly I think QB's have it easy... when it comes to play calling. It's the other 10 players that have it tough. Right or wrong the QB knows what he's going to do... the other's have to instantly interpret that from the time the play is called until the ball is snapped... seconds, IOW's.
I often wonder how many times GRob, or Britt, or any of the others get to the LOS and just before the snap think, "Say what again?" Then after a play, in which they weren't really involved, think "Whew, dodged that one".
... that I hadn't thought about before: Even when the play call comes in from the sideline, the QB always has a few extra seconds to assess his part in it before he relays that in the huddle. Given how quickly things typically move between plays, that's a real plus. And, as you say, he ALWAYS knows what he said. There've gotta be lots of times when one or more of the other 10 guys walks up to the LOS and realizes he's not quite sure what was called. You KNOW many a guard has turned to his center, or vice versa, and said: "what'd he say?!"
