The list of toxins being thrown into the air is long. And these are the worst fires in the areas history and show no signs of letting up right now.
You are right, people that haven't been around this type of thing don't know how bad it is.
Some years ago I was unlucky enough to be working in Naples during a bad drought and a large fire broke out. It went on for awhile because it was so dry. I have pictures of ashes settled on my wipers on my car, it was bad. Even inside the showroom the smell was strong, outside it would make you uncomfortable in just a moment.
That fire is dwarfed by this situation.
