EVERY game in the NFL has an alternate stadium in an emergency like hurricanes, major snowfall, tornados and other things.

One of those other things is raging wildfires effing up air quality. And torrential rainfall. The Fires are miles away from Inglewood and the winds have finally died down.

Which means the firefighters can now deploy their air assets.

I know you guys are seeing the TV images showing the thick smoke but trust me, just a very few miles away the air is just fine. The prevailing breezes see to that.

It’s now Wednesday evening and the game isn’t until Monday night. Things will look a lot better by then, even in the affected areas.

A same day as a game blizzard on the east coast is one thing, but this is nothing like that.

The game can and should be played as scheduled on Monday night.

I’m not trying to minimize the disaster for those immediately affected, but let’s don’t throw out the baby with the bath water in the meantime.

hahahaha open mouth insert foot

I won't clog the board to describe how in detail, even though I know, I'll just cite enough of it to illustrate my experience here in the Bitterroot Valley where I live.

Fires in Idaho, a rugged mountain range and 100 air miles from my house, can be a news event only and our air as clear, here in Big Sky country, as ever. The fires might burn for weeks - a line is established and a wind shift - all of a sudden it's blowing absolutely the wrong, non-typical, opposite, unpredicted direction at gale force - and within a couple of hours, we're inundated.. We see the smoke not as the plume reaching 30,000 feet altitude in Idaho and then hitting air layers where it flattens out and moves the opposite direction from the winds that put it up, but as a dark shroud that conceals the mountains entirely from view, driven by winds that shift like a vertical churn as the heated air rises, and pulls ground air with it, and then has to move other - sometimes opposite - directions.

Prevailing winds and weather predictions at that point don't mean a damn thing.

At some point all that airborne particulate has to come down.

Will SOFI be smoke-free on Monday night? Maybe so.

And if so, I'd expect some "See there?" commentary.

I don't care. I'm not here to argue; I'm just trying to provide information based on better than a half-century of firsthand experience, living around wildfires, forest fires. I often see them from my back deck, just a few miles away. I hunt and fish with firefighters and have learned, from them, a great deal about fires.Living and working in the outdoors I've made it my business. Had to make it my business.

The guys here on this board who are firefighters know what I'm talking about and I thank you for chiming in. You know: What you think is predicted, or what you think is some percentage of containment as reported on the evening news, can literally blow up in your face.

Or, will SOFI look safe Sunday and my Monday evening be in a fire-created wind pattern that produces a fallout of measureable fly ash or invisible poisonous chemical fog that makes the stadium a dangerous place to be, much less for young athletes to play football?

We simply do not know that, either. We cannot know that.

And because we don't, the safe and wise thing to do is MOVE THE GAME.

Or the nice folks in Lomg Beach, Orange County, or Covina? Should they evacuate because of ‘unhealthy air measurements? And if not, why not?

Here's an air quality map of LA as of 9am today:

... and here's a chart that explains the various air quality ratings:

As far as the people who live in that red area are concerned apparently they can stay home of they want to. Based just on what I read in mtrmafan's post I would be elsewhere or at least taking some serious precautions if that wasn't feasible. But those folks are out of the NFL's jurisdiction.

I assume that the NFL will concern itself only with the health and safety of the players and the fans who attend the game. And to be clear, they haven't said they are moving the game. They said they have contingency plans if conditions warrant a move.

Current forecast say that the AQI will be 53 (barely into the yellow) on Monday - conditions are expected to be fine by game time so this is mostly a hypothetical discussion. But hypothetically, if game time conditions were maroon (from the above chart) would you want the game to stay in LA?

Some Things To Be Aware Of Outside Of Unhealthy Air Quality

With California suffering the effects of climate change for several years now, safety personnel (i.e. fire and law enforcement) are well adept to handle wildfires in any type of terrain and time of year.

With that said, what LA County has experienced (and is continuing to experience) over the past couple of days is truly unique. We have THREE major wildfires going on in the county that have resulted in the loss of life and thousands of structures. Compounding the problem is that the heavy winds (which are forecasted to return again over the weekend) have made it extremely difficult to utilize air support to get containment. As such, firefighters are overly reliant on their ground forces. The firefighters rely upon local law enforcement to help with evacuations, set up roadblocks, and security (for them and the neighborhoods). But because we're talking about multiple large areas (with more smaller fires popping up here and there in between), there simply aren't enough resources to get a handle on things quickly and safely. Now, most of the time, counties can rely upon mutual aid from neighboring cities/counties. But our neighbors are unable to send their full complement of resources knowing damn well that their county/community is subject to the same wildfire situation - most recently in Camarillo (Ventura Co.).

I'm sure that ALL NFL stadiums require a minimum level of law enforcement and fire response both on-site at the stadium as well as within a 5-mile radius. But if local safety personnel are deployed to address these ongoing wildfire emergencies, there's no guarantee that they can meet their minimum requirements for an event at SoFi Stadium - especially since the nation just suffered a terrorist attack only a week ago.

I'm hoping that the winds die down and that firefighters can get ahold of things. But resources are stretched extremely thin right now and I'm sure the NFL is taking note of all of this.

The entire population is even more likely to be affected by serious health effects. [www.google.com]

An air quality of 300 qualifies as an unsafe condition. We're not talking about 'smelling smoke' - we're talking about breathing air that is so toxic that it will negatively affect one's health, possibly permanently. And if that's the reading at game time then the game will be moved. It's as simple as that.

People are asking 'what do we do if the AQI is 300 at game time?' Saying 'Don't worry, that isn't going to happen' doesn't answer the question, even if there's a 99.9% chance that it isn't going to happen.

That said, I doubt that the AQI will be anywhere near 300 at game time for the reasons you've stated. So yes, I fully expect the game to be played at SoFi Monday night.

But that’s not the issue.

Nor is smoke in affected areas. We all agree that that is terrible.

I’m unfamiliar with the range of AQI numbers. All I know is that other than the smoke from the affected areas the air seems just fine to me.

Can we both agree that football is often played in other than ideal conditions.

Blizzards
High winds
Sub-zero temperatures
Driving rainstorms

Just to name a few.

Here’s all I’m asking. Let our collective common sense dictate whether an NFL playoff game can be safely played 20-25 miles away from the smoke from fires in the mountains, especially when prevailing winds are scouring the air toward the ocean?

Game isn’t for 5 more days, so I’m betting that it will be played at SOFI.
