Juts don't know what examples you are talking about ... I think they do their best to get the best players they can that fit into the budget. They don't seem to value ILBer as much as OLBer or other spots or they would have taken one they liked this year or last year. Maybe they wanted to take an ILber late but the IOL guy was too much of a value to pass up. Or all sorts of things.
They are surely wanting to upgrade at ILBer but cannot do everything at once, is my point. The 2nd ILBer spot is mitigated in this defense because they play a lot of single linebacker packages, the Penny or the Dime ... and will probably do so this year. I'd expect Curl to be one of the ILBers in packages.
But, my point with the UDFA is he's small, have coverage ability and would fit with the position ... with Rams where he might not on other teams. He may have a draftable grade by Rams because he does things the ask. And they also paid him a bonus making him a more of a priority UFA.
Anyway, based on limited view, I think he's gotta shot at roster but challenging Rozeboom.
Reeder? really only played MIKE in packages versus strong running teams when they wanted Jones to play the Jack. Very limited role and had experience in it.
