One of my personal favorite 1980s Rams. One of those good-not-great players on some very good Rams' defenses. Probably among the top...75 (or so?) players in Rams' history?
But certainly, trading those picks to move up from 20 to 9 for him is....debatable.
Rams didn't want him specifically. They thought there were 8 elite players in the draft and the odds were, in their mind, someone would drop to them. No one did. Sp they took someone from what could be called their tier 2.
Owens was 225-230, ran a 4.5-4.6 benched pressed 390 pounds. Good college tape for the kind of linebacker they liked in those days. Had flaws wouldn't tackle with right shoulder unless he had to (had hurt it early in college career)
But the good news is without any doubt had Rich Campbell fallen Rams would have taken him and he almost did. Of course had Lott or Easley or any of those guys dropped, I don't know how they had their board stacked ... but Campbell almost fell to them and as date would have it, Owens a better pro than Campbell/
