The last two seasons he was with the Rams...Klosterman was pushed aside...He did nothing and was a figure head only...This was John Shaw's show and whoever he gathered around him...I actually have made a connection with the Klosterman family...and they break down this situation...I think what's often forgotten is Klosterman was also the GM of the LA Express...and before ownership imploded he built that team with some terrific signings...
Steinberg was not renewed in Summer of 1980. And while Klosterman did not call all the shots as he kind of had (actually always consulted the old man before he died) he was involved in the draft process, making trades and doing things Math didn't have the experience for.
Remember Rams made three huge deals that day, not just the Owens deals and they were pretty nuanced. That was Klosterman. I talked to Klosterman in Century City in 1995 or so- -- at his penthouse. And met his daughter a few years after he had passed.
Yes, Shaw was getting more powerful, but he didn't have the ability to run football things yet.
Then after Klosterman axed, Math had more control --- getting help from Faulkner and Malavasi.
That's my understanding -- which is slightly different than yours.
