Deebo ... why would any team (Rams) allow him to " run free " against zone coverage ever again ?
Maybe because when he was targeted vs Rams man coverage he was 4/7 112 yards and 1 TD -- 141 passer rating?
But in general what happens when teams play man vs 49ers? What does Kittle do? What happens when they check to a RB? How does Aiyuk do?
Do they check to a motion where Deebo runs the ball?
It's a team game.
In 2023 49ers threw 14 TDs vs man. 12 vs zone.
Close right?
Well there were 107 targets vs man and vs more than twice as many (294) zone
and it was basically the same in 2022
So it was not really close
Big plays, chunk plays, scoring plays come from man more often than zone.
49ers are good vs man---all teams in the long run will make plays vs man. That is why NFL plays match zone or zone 75% of the time. there are too many ways to beat man. Shuffled releases, crossing routes, motion, check downs to backs or chunjk plays to the TE where it is a physical mismatch.
Now, you point to the Super Bowl ... and Chiefs beat them and checked Samuel. Well, Rams did, too in 2021 and won the Super Bowl just did it in a different way.
If you go by a small sample for Chiefs you have to do the same for Rams
Trust me, if man defenses were doable in the NFL, NFL coaches would be using them 50-75% of the time not zone. Rules favor offenses and the things that helped man defenses are not allowable now.
