But again, I think Snead and McVay knew about this or at minimum had a good idea it was coming earlier than we think. Sure, would be easier maybe if he had announced it in mid February. But it is also 3 days into FA and 6 weeks before the Draft. He is not by any means leaving the Rams high and dry.
I was sure 2024 would be his last year. I knew he would never be a guy that limped to the finish at age 35. Was simply off by one year. Wish him the best and think this team has plans in place to evolve and grow. When Jack Youngblood retired in 1985 the Rams went on to have a top-3 defense and go to the NFCCG.
More players should walk away on their own terms like this.
To be clear, we are in agreement that he was a great player, and Rams fans owe him an awful lot. Of course, he has the right to retire at anytime he chooses.
But it could’ve been handled much better in my opinion. Yes, he did privately notify the Rams prior to free agency, to his credit, but wouldn’t it have been nice if the Rams and AD had called a presser in February and made the announcement at that time, rather than an announcement on social media? it would’ve given teammates and Ram fans more time to absorb this hit, rather than after the first week of free agency. The optics are just terrible here for AD.
We can agree to disagree on this one. We only disagree on the timing and manner of the announcement, anyway.
We both had figured that this would be his final year.
