Noteboom's contract calls for the Rams to pay him $15M this year - a $5M roster bonus due March 18 and then a $10M salary. Note that that's
$15M for a backup OL. Combined with $5M in pro-rated signing bonus his cap hit is $20M.
The Rams could convert his roster bonus and around $8M of his salary to a signing bonus and spread that $13M over 5 seasons by adding another 2 void years to his deal. That would reduce his cap hit this year to $9.6M, freeing up $10.4M in cap space this year.
The problem as I see it is, the Rams would still be paying him $15M to be a backup OL. They would just be spreading $10.4M of that seriously inflated expense over 5 years instead of 1. (And then it all would come due in 2025 in the form of dead money.)
I would not pay a backup OL $15M no matter how anyone wanted to account for that against the cap. If it was me, Noteboom would either agree to reduce his pay this season from $15M to around $4.6M or I would cut him. That would still reduce his cap hit in 2024 to $9.6M without adding $10.4M in dead money to the 2025 cap.
And I bet he would take that offer cuz I don't think anyone else is gonna pay him more than $4.6M.
