Without reading another DaSilva piece, and getting lost in those weeds, Joe's situation is not a one-step solution.
In my mind the process ges more like this:
1. Have a frank talk w/Joe and his agent about his future and how his interests and the Rams interests can intersect; then make a firm offer to restructure at a rate other teams could afford in trade. This deal should be done before draft.
a. If Joe accepts, Rams have options.
b. If talks drag on or Joe refuses, or cannot cut a deal in compromise that is liveable for the Rams and also presents viable trade option, cut him. This in turn changes the draft strategy. See 3, below.
2. If 1a above, Rams can:
a. keep him, along with healthier young developmental players already on the roster (and we don't know how they have developed under Coach Wendy) in event Joe goes down again.
b. actively shop him for trade value, either for mid-late round pick in this year's draft, or a separate-but equal backup player at position of need. Even a special teamer.
3. In event of 2b above, actively seek a good OT prospect with upside (there appears to a couple available) in early mid-rounds of this year's draft. If this happens, open competition in camp between rostered and new players is heated up and prioritized.
Makes sense to me.
