Dan Campbell is very aggressive about making what seem to be risky play calls.
His 4th down percentage so far has supported his decisions, but to those not used to watching the Lions it may seem shocking at times.
When they beat the Chiefs in week 1 he called for a fake punt early in the game from their own 30 or thereabouts. And it succeeded.
In part because I don't think the Chiefs even imagined he would do that.
In Dallas, after their successful would-be game winning 2pt conversion was nullified by penalty, Campbell just kept going for 2. He said he had committed to the offense before that drive that if they went down and scored a TD he would go for 2 and they would win. So he stuck to what he told them.
Does it look reckless at times? Yes, it does. But it works for them more often than not, so he's committed to it. He doesn't back down just because it doesn't always work. And he doesn't care what people say about it. You can't say "this is who we are", and then get cold feet when the games get bigger.
In both the Ram and Buccaneer playoff wins the Lions went for the TD on 4th and goal. Both times they converted it. 7 pts instead of 3. Or maybe 0. But that's Campbell and he's not going to change.
