Further up in the thread I respond to George (stlzram). With a qualifier using Gibbs and Walsh as examples
For me I just really struggle with the blind spots, the red zone issues, the goal to go not running, the total lack of focus on the run game
I mean the Rams defense was reeling 1st half. The second half they brought it … didn’t you expect the offense with McVay and Stafford to seize that thing. I kept waiting for them to do it and they did not. I mean they were playing the 85 Bears defense.
So I hope that helps at least add context to my question
I also worry about Stafford’s longevity and the Rams window with him closing
Do you think he’s elite? What would be your definition
Yeah, i'd say he elite but you may have a different definition and there is no wrong answer.
Here is another question -- can a player be elite and still have some flaws? Was Terrell Owens elite? he's a Hall of Famer but dropped passes at a right higher than his contemporaries. Randy Moss would take games off. Some great edge rushers cannot play the run.
How about this;;;Eric Dickerson was elite. But he was not a nimble pass catcher and couldn't block. He was not elite on passing downs. But he was super elite as a runner.
Marshall Faulk was more complete. He might not have been as good a runner as Dickerson, or me might have if he got 350-400 carriers. But he was elite pass catcher and blocker.
Both elite ... one more complete than others.
McVay does the good things we like---Rams usually winners, have a ring, close to another.
But does the things poorly that you talk about.
Just like I would not say Dickerson is not elite --- I wouldn't say McVay was not elite.
But just because they have flaws and there is others who are elite in more things does not mean McVay and Dickerson are not.
So just because there are better or have been better coaches---Gibbs ... and the other names mentioned---call him Marshall Faulk in this analogy and McVay Dickerson
Separate issue, sure, I think the plays in the red zone have been lacking in success ... they have failed to be as efficient in red zone ... especially the LRZ ... had Rams been for effective in both play calling and execution Rams would have made it tough on Lions.
Why do they struggle in LRZ? I honestly don't know. I don't know if it's run-pass ratio, that he gives up on running down there or if the pass plays he called were not effective for the situation or if the calls were good and the execution was poor. If I were to guess it was not the same thing on the plays ... some were wrong calls -- run or pass, some were probably poor calls for the situation and some were poor execution.
My guess is it is not one thing .. .its some of several things.
