You can't predict mental illness until it manfests - that's the problem.
Young men make mistakes, especially young men in pressured environments. A one-off drunk driving post-fling incident isn't enough to say a young man has a drinking problem. If the young man appears to have straightened himself out, good.
The underlying causes may date back to childhood (and in Stetson's case, I think they do) but may not become apparent until much later. And there is much, now, that we as fans on the outside simply don't know. My conjecture is simply that - conjecture, arrived at by connecting some of the dots I'm familiar with.
For now, even though it smarts a little as a fan, I'll give Snead and McVay an A++ for the discreet and humane way they are handling Stetson Bennett.
