I see Boom much the same way. Great swing tackle. HUGE mistake of a large 2nd contract for a starting LOT that can not stay healthy and would be a fairly mediocre LOT anyways. The Rams have made lots of these mistakes in the past few years.
I think we have noticed that more often than not the big 2nd contracts do not work out very well. Hence, why I preferred another vet blocking TE, developing the TE drafted this year and perhaps drafting a pass catching TE this versus a 3rd contract for Higbee.

Here's a possibility:
Boom is a better LT than Jackson. But Boom can't stay healthy.
I don't have access to PFF and I know they aren't the be-all, end-all as far as performance ... but I wonder what they have to say about Boom and Jackson.
Let’s set PFF aside. I’m not their biggest fan, anyway.
I can’t get around Boom’s inability to stay healthy. It alone is a deal breaker, much like Allen at C for me.
But even putting that aside, too, my eyeballs are telling me that Jackson has clearly outplayed Boom at LOT, and Dotson has definitely beat Boom out at RG.
So, how does McVay rationalize Boom as a starter? I consider Boom an okay swing at either position but definitely not the starter at either.
Boom may well be gone in 2024 and no team contemplates that for legit starters.
