This is a broken record of occurrences with the backfield. The old song that we discuss every season. Question this year is do they have better depth options who can actually hold the fort while Williams gets back to health.
Evans was another McVay type back selection, where they couldn't help themselves and jumped on the talent late. And he is talented. But here we are in that situation where we are relying on him so that mentality of "we got him late so it's ok risk" doesn't matter. Right now it's "we need him." I didn't like the pick, I admit that. But I'm not writing the guy off, rather just saying that the whole thing stinks of previous seasons, which is depressing. McVay did not name him the starter either, which might be an indicator that his pass pro hasn't improved all that much, but we'll have to wait and see.
Freeman gives us a little extra hope here, in terms of knowing we have an NFL talent for the backfield who should be able to do the backup job. He's nothing special, quite marginal in fact, but he's experienced and should know the offense by now.
In the NFL injuries are going to happen with your RB position. So I'm not going to act like we should have studs 3 deep on the depth chart. Rather I am saying we need dependable backs behind the starter. I really like Williams but he's small and runs physical and takes shots so he's going to miss time here and there. This offense is completely different when they have balance vs when they do not. This stuff is important and the fact that it's been a continuing problem for us is something I find to be a great annoyance.
But maybe this year things are different. Got my fingers crossed here.
