Half the guys you list aren't even starting on those teams. And I just don't buy into the statement that because you're still in the league, you were a successful draft pick. That's a pretty low metric.
Well, that's DaSilva's metric, not mine. This is from his article: "Typically, the mark of a good draft pick is a second contract." And that's the basis of his criticism.

As is that we just churn soon to be overpriced second contract players and draft their new cheap replacements by grand design. That's what everyone does- let go of underperforming players that don't deserve a second contract, and draft their replacements.
See, that's the exact opposite of what I said. I agree 100% that most teams let go of underperforming players and then draft their replacements. What the Rams do is anticipate who is going to play out their rookie contract a year or two from now and draft their replacements so they get a year or two in the system to prepare to take over. Furthermore, plenty of the FAs the Rams let go are indeed worthy of a second contract - that's why the Rams a flush with comp picks year after year: they sign contracts that are big enough to warrant compensation.

How do we keep on winning with these draft picks you name? By signing Ramsey, Fowler, Timmerman, Miller, Cooks, Weddle, OBJ, and a host of other FA acquisitions.
Any discussion of how the Rams draft has to account for the fact that the Rams use some of their draft capital to trade for proven talent. The Rams traded draft picks for Ramsey, Fowler, Miller, and Cooks, (they were not FAs!) and got better return for their draft capital than anyone could reasonably expect from the actual picks had they kept them.

Don't believe me? Here are the guys actually selected with the draft picks the Rams traded away.

2018 draft, 1.23 Isaiah Wynn, OT Pats
2018 draft, 6.198, Kahlil McKenzie, Chiefs
2019 draft, 3.94 Jamel Dean, CB Bucs
2020 draft, 1.20 K'Lavon Chaisson, DE Jags
2020 draft, 5.165 Collin Johnson, CB Jags
2021 draft, 1.25 Travis Etienne, RB Jags
2021 draft, 4.130 Robert Rochelle, CB Rams (yeah, the Rams got that pick back)
2022 draft, 2.64 Nik Bonitto, OLB Broncos
2022 draft, 3.96, Nick Cross, S Colts

The Rams also got a 4th rounder back from the Pats when they traded for Cooks and with that pick they took John Franklin-Myers.

There are certainly some good players taken with the Rams' original picks, but if the question is: "Do I prefer Ramsey, Fowler, Miller, Cooks, and JFM -or - the 9 players in the above draft list" I'm thinking the Rams did just fine.

And the point is exactly that. This team was built on FA players, with the draft meant to fill the cracks. It's worked throughout McVay's time here. As we all know, it particularly worked very well the year we won the Super Bowl.
A total of *4* FAs started for the Rams in SB56: OBJ, Whitworth, Floyd, and A'Shawn Robinson. The winners of SB57 - the Chiefs - had *5*: Michael Burton, Marquez Valdez-Scantling, Joe Thuney, Andrew Wiley, and Justin Reid. It really isn't that out of the ordinary ...
