I'm under the impression that a player's salary is guaranteed for the season if they make the initial 53. (Or maybe if they're on the roster for the first game?)
I think if Akers is traded his new team pays the remainder of his salary, but if they cut him the Rams still have to pay him.
As I understand it that's why Maher was on the PS the first game. They could cut him now and be free and clear of any financial obligation, but if they signed him to the roster before the first game they'd have to pay him his full salary even if he was cut.
