mutiple sets - more like what Dallas was doing but
we never got to see it...
Walsh, I think, wanted more power than Rams were willing to offer
wanted to be able to have a lot of say in personnel
and could have had to do with buyout of Stanford contract---
Walsh in 1978---missed opportunity
After Allen got job, talked about bringing Namath back
or bringing Billy Kilmer in, he DID bring Gabriel in
but he flunked the physical...
Then all the nonsense in camp and preseason and boom
Allen was gone--
disaster
I recall Allen wanting Gabriel back, but Gabe being done so that is great information. Also the fact Malavasi was a finalist with Allen & Reeves makes sense as to why Carroll Rosenbloom was willing to make the change because he did have an internal that he liked. However, Malavasi was a very good defensive coach, but very unorganized I recall Jack Youngblood praising John Robinson for that compared to Malavasi. Malavasi did get the Rams to the Super Bowl & he and Bud Carson designed a defense, 7 defensive backs that propelled Roger Staubach right into retirement.
I cannot thank you enough 53, great information and I was only 12 in 1978, but I always felt the Rams were going to hire Bill Walsh and at the last minute went with George Allen, that obviously was not correct.
