I was rooting for McVay to hire Mike LaFleur and think it is the perfect match.
The come from the Mike Shanahan West Coast Offense with McVay adding in a lot of Gruden. They had a previous tie in with his brother who was McVay's 1st offensive coordinator and he has a ton of experience especially when compared to Coen.
I think McVay needs a guy who is smart like him who can help him to see more clearly during the fog of war. I think LaFleur is also a guy who can add to the thoughts around the offensive scheme, especially the running game which has gone through 2 different blocking schemes since McVay has taken over.
I doubt McVay will give up play calling at least he can have a voice to settle him down and give him perspective that he respects when he gets a little too locked in. I don't think he had that last year with Coen. Also the OC is responsible for the game plan and LaFleur should be an upgrade in that department.
I also think the Rams are going to really focus on the running game which is an area where McVay & Kyle Shanahan's offense have diverged somewhat. The offensive line looks like it will be a lot bigger and healthier than last year and perhaps LaFleur can help figure things out in this department. I think we have everything we need to have a great offense but controlling the ball and eating up the clock will be key in limiting the time that our young and inexperienced defense is on the field.
Anyway I think this was the perfect hire and I have high hopes that our offense is going to be really good.
