Is that he's got his back to the wall. If he wants a big payday he's got to produce this year. So he's a good piece for the Rams to hold onto and let him do it or fail.
The key is not doing what they have done prior, which is failing to build the depth chart correctly. But now that Coach Brown is gone and we have a new RB Coach maybe the old dumb decisions of relying on the same old failing players will be a thing of the past. Brown was stupidly overrated IMO. McVay learned that one the hard way.
Just don't go into 2023 fully reliant on Akers. Have a backup plan, i.e. a guy who can eat carries and keep the offense grounded, and you're good.
