Morris took over a defensive system he'd never coached before, but he had a talented team to work with that already had a year playing it. With things bogging down in November, the team added a spark in Von Miller and the rest was history. Despite the success, we can kind of look on that year as a learning year in the Fangio for Raheem. Not saying the players coached themselves, but they probably knew the system better than the coach.
Cut to the next season. A handfull of starters and contributors have left and not been replaced by equal. Injuries pile up, teams are giving us their best shot. Any wrinkles or individual flair Morris wants to add goes out the window in a battle to just survive.
Year 3, The gutting of the defense continues. Morris will be asked to make chicken salad out of first year defensive backs, rookie edge rushers and guys with little playing experience on the line. Survival mode continues.
I don't know if Morris is any good as a DC, but I can't say he isn't either. He was handed a #1 defense on a silver platter, then the front office has proceeded to tear it apart. There are exactly 8, players left from the entire defense of our 2021 season Super Bowl, Only AD and Fuller remain from Staley's #1 defense of 2020, while Copeland, Rozeboom and Hoecht were on the practice squad. What's a guy supposed to do?
