Yes...Coaches can place bad schemes but I CANNOT STAND to see any Coach take heat for half a$$ effort. Once you get to the NFL, you are SUPPOSED to be the elite among the elite of football players and you are paid a CAAARAP LOAD of $$$$$$$$$$$$ to do so. If it takes a Coach to motivate you, you need to hit the bricks. Toooo many times in 2022, I saw some LAME efforts by players. Hell, with a lot of dead weight gone, we just might have a BETTER D in 2023.....WITH heart!
I'm not so sure that I've seen poor effort on the Rams defense. But lack of talent? Yeah...I've def seen a lot of that.
Case in point: Troy Reeder.
I don't doubt for one second that he emptied the tank by the end of every game. I think that he was coached up and knew his assignments.
But none of those things seemed to matter as he repeatedly chose the wrong lanes to fill, would completely whiff on ball carriers right in front of him, or get trucked by 185-lb WR's. This is a classic case of what can happen when you put a bunch of low-round/UFA's on the field with the expectation that they're always going to get the job done against the likes of Deebo Samuels. The Rams were able to cover this up with AD, VM, Ramsey, and Weddle during the Super Bowl run, but not so much last year. But I don't think that it's for a lack of effort.
We can't be shocked and appalled that the DB we drafted in the 6th round can't tackle consistently or transition out of his backpedal without the 2nd round WR blasting by him. THERE'S A REASON WHY HE WAS DRAFTED IN THE 6TH ROUND!
