In the few games I saw last year I noticed a lot of Rams so-called "bad picks" doing right well on other teams.
We win a Super Bowl, ol' Trader Les is a genius. We draft the OL help we need in the middle rounds a couple of years prior, and Snead is a genius drafter who can find talent after the first day. So many oin this board were looking for an OL collapse then - we saw it last year, due to what I'd call the"blue tent factor" - NOT poor trading or drafting.
Snead works collaboratively with the HC to get the player the HC wants (or, in the case of Bruss) the player a position coach wants and somebody jumps into a swimming pool at night to somehow celebrate the occasion, and Snead's a genius - because he got the player the coach wanted. How THAT one will turn out we still don't know. So far, when he's been on the field, in my eyes anyway Bruss has underwhelmed. He gets knocked on his ass or hurt. He loks pudgy. Snead never says "I toldya so..." much less " Let ME choose the players."
Snead sees the draft as a collaborative process, which is good, because McVay is a control freak who wants his hands on everything. It's like delegation, even to uber-qualified subordinates, puts him out of his comfort zone.
Ownership and upper management, a few years ago, said "We need a coach who can... " and Snead went out and got McVay - and it took some intensive interviewing to convince higher management to give this young, intense, ADHD, driven, but minimally qualified in terms of coaching experience upstart a shot. That acquisition, all Snead's, has worked out OK. I'd like to see him have more of that same autronomy going forward.
On this board, because of our intense focus on the here-and-now, and forgetting that we don't have full access to the decision-making apparatus, leaves us a little short-sighted and impatient at times.
I hope Les stays aropund for a long time - and that others see his value, loosen the ties on his hands, and give him more sway to actually manage the lineup. I think he's pretty doggone good at it.
