I don't think it portends a change in definsive philosophy necessarily. But I think it does reflect a desire to have Morris do less "hands-on" coaching and spend more time on big picture game planning. Lake provides Morris someone to bounce ideas off of other than McVay, who has never made claims to know defense.
Meanwhiile we have Pleasant and Beake both doing the hand-on piece.
As for the soft zone, I'm going to place my faith in the thought that it was a product of not having the players/skills to do anything else. Now, with more experienced corners, the plan may be to be less predictable.
Regarding the "lack of talent", I do agree, however, there were teams out there with equal or LESS talent than we had yet they managed to not play a glorified "Prevent" defense 95% of the time. And tell me how many of those other teams had 3 HOF'ers on the unit???
Somehow, they were creative enough to not have run the Charmin Shell as often as we did. They didn't play scared. They were able to manage just fine.
As 43 said, Morris called more Ultra Soft Shell than any other team in the league...and he did it with 3 HOF'ers on his unit...on a 5 win team!!!
Seriously, What did we have to lose by "gambling" a bit on D? We were a 5 friggin win team!!! That screams a "lack of creativity" or "inability" to coach up "lesser" talent.
What's that old saying from Bear Bryant? "a great coach could take his'n and beat your'n, then take your'n and beat his'n.”
I don't think that applies to to Morris. lol IMO, he played scared all year or didn't have a clue how to use the talent he had and make them better even though he had 3 HOF'ers to work with.
I am hoping we do see a little less of the Charmin Shell and I don't care who is the reason why. I agree that I don't see that happening because Morris couldn't do it with 3 HOF'ers on his unit, how will he do it with only 2 HOF'ers???
#HelmetHornsMatter
“Well, the color is good, I like the metallic blue,” Youngblood recently said while laughing, via NFL Journal. “The horn is terrible. It looks like a ‘C.’ When I first saw it on the logo I honestly thought it was a Charger logo.
“Now when I see it on the helmet, it just isn’t a ram horn. There is no distinct curl like a mature ram horn. I don’t know how the Rams could get that wrong. That is your symbol and it has been for what? Seventy years or more? Longer than I have been alive? It’s just not us, it’s not the Rams.”---Mr. Ram Jack Youngblood
