If he had one more year on his contract, why didnt the Rams seek to trade him instead of waiving him outright?!
I can only think of one reason, and it doesn't even sound like a good one to me.
Even though they cut Wagner yesterday they can call it a post-June 1 cut and get $8M in cap relief this year instead of $5M.
But if they traded him they would be locked into that $5M cap savings. (Unlike when a team cuts a player, they actually have to trade the guy after June 1 to get that cap relief.)
I'm not sure what the Rams could have gotten for an All Pro ILB who was rated the best LB in the league last year ... but they essentially gave that up simply to push a $3M cap hit from the 2023 cap to the 2024 cap.
I read elsewhere that Rams won’t use that June 1st designation because it would deprive BW of an opportunity to hook up with another team early in this offseason.
Don’t know how that designation works, but if true? That would be a very classy move on Rams part.
