I can only think of one reason, and it doesn't even sound like a good one to me.
Even though they're going to cut Wagner in the near future they can call it a post-June 1 cut and get $8M in cap relief this year instead of $5M.
But if they traded him they would be locked into that $5M cap savings. (Unlike when a team cuts a player, they actually have to trade the guy after June 1 to get that cap relief.)
I'm not sure what the Rams could have gotten for an All Pro ILB who was rated the best LB in the league last year ... but they are essentially gaving that up simply to push a $3M cap hit from the 2023 cap to the 2024 cap.
