The problem with restructuring is you take cap dollars from this year and defer them to future years. All well and good if you have cap room in future years. And according to overthecap.com the Rams do have room in 2025 ($104.6M) and 2026 ($215.7M) ... but 2024 is already an issue since as of today the Rams are nearly $3M over the 2024 cap.
So I can tell you some of the moves the Rams can make to get relief from being more than $14M over the cap this year. But every restructure makes the 2024 situation worse.
Restructure Donald. His 2023 salary is $13.5M and he is also set to get a $15M roster bonus. The Rams could convert that roster bonus to a signing bonus and also convert $12M of his salary to a roster bonus, too. So add a void year in 2027 and spread that $27M over 5 years at $5.4M a year to gain $21.6M in cap space in 2023.
Restructure Kupp. His 2023 salary is $15M and he is also set to get a $5M roster bonus. The Rams could convert that roster bonus to a signing bonus and also convert $13M of his salary to a roster bonus, too. So add a void year in 2027 and spread that $18M over 5 years at $3.6M a year to gain $14.4M in cap space in 2023.
Restructure Ramsey. His 2023 salary is $17M. Convert $15M of that to a signing bonus, add a couple void years to his deal, and spread that $15M over 5 years at $3M a year to gain $12M in cap space.
Restructure Allen Robinson. His 2023 salary is $10M and he is also set to get a $5.25M roster bonus. The Rams could convert that roster bonus to a signing bonus and also convert $8M of his salary to a roster bonus, too. So add a void year in 2027 and spread that $13.25M over 5 years at $2.65M a year to gain $10.6M in cap space in 2023.
Restructure Floyd. His 2023 salary is $13.5M and he is also set to get a $2M roster bonus. The Rams could convert that roster bonus to a signing bonus and also convert $11M of his salary to a roster bonus, too. So add another void year in 2027 and spread that $13M over 5 years at $2.6M a year to gain $10.4M in cap space in 2023.
Restructure Noteboom. His 2023 salary is $8.5M and he is also set to get a $5M roster bonus. The Rams could convert that roster bonus to a signing bonus and also convert $7M of his salary to a roster bonus, too. So add another void year in 2027 and spread that $12M over 5 years at $2.4M a year to gain $9.6M in cap space in 2023.
Restructure BWagz. His 2023 salary is $7.5M and he is also set to get a $3.5M roster bonus. The Rams could convert that roster bonus to a signing bonus and also convert $6M of his salary to a roster bonus, too. So add a void year in 2027 and spread that $9.5M over 5 years at $1.9M a year to gain $7.6M in cap space in 2023.
There are also some guys they could cut or trade for additional cap relief. Allen, for instance, could be a post-June 1 cut for an additional $4.4M is cap savings. But just looking at those 7 restructures: if the Rams did do all of them they'd gain $86.2M in cap space in 2023, leaving them nearly $72M under the cap.
And they'd also be around $24.5M over the cap for 2024 ... but that's a discussion for next year.
