I don't think it is entirely just to be a jerk. I think people think its some kind of fandom to go to other fans message boards and talk smack or whatever. I remember being on a board in 1998 before I found the Herd board anyway, and posters from other teams would come on and just talk the biggest poo I've ever heard. I actually hated all of New Orleans for years because of the moronic fans that would talk trash...
So I think there is some carryover perhaps. I can see how it could escalate to violence pretty quickly. It sucks IMO. But then so does music that glorifies rape and killing and video games that glorify mass murder. Not sure what's going on. It reminds me of the Romans feeding people to lions for amusement of the crowd... what happened to stop that?
I know people who would never send their kids to a public school... and more than a few of those teach in a public school. Another is a judge. It's a different time. People who create entertainment aren't held accountable for anything they inspire. But then censorship isn't always a good way to counteract that stuff. I'm guessing society has to say enough is enough... when they've had enough.
